Rigging, Hoisting, Hand and Power Tool Safety
Participants gain an overview of rigging equipment and practices; inspections and records on chokers and slings; lifting equipment inspections and regulations; maintenance and inspection of hand and power tools; safe work practices; machine guarding requirements; employee training and records; and personal protective equipment.
The course is part of Tennessee Valley Public Power Association’s (TVPPA) Certified Safety Coordinator (CSC) program.
CERTIFIED SAFETY COORDINATOR (CSC): Individuals responsible for safety management must have current, professional knowledge and expertise to achieve and maintain a safe work environment and work practices for utility employees. TVPPA developed the Certified Safety Coordinator (CSC) to address modern health and safety issues. All course requirements satisfactorily completed within four years of starting the program by taking a required core course.
COURSES TO COMPLETE TO EARN CSC CERTIFICATE:
- OSHA 30 Hr. Card – Part 1
- OSHA 30 Hr. Card – Part 2
- Utility Work Practices Rule Compliance
- Rigging, Hoisting, Hand and Power Tool Safety
- Transportation Safety
- Accident Investigation
- National Electrical Safety Code Review
Participants may complete the course as a standalone course outside of pursuing CSC certification.

Transportation Safety
This course covers transportation maintenance and mechanical inspection programs; Commercial Drivers License requirements and applicability; substance abuse screening; motor carrier regulations; safety measures to reduce the occurrence of accidents; accident investigations; and resources available to assist safety coordinators in their transportation safety efforts.

CANCELED Hot Weather and Fleet Safety Training
THE HOT WEATHER & FLEET SAFETY TRAINING SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 24, 2024 HAS BEEN CANCELED BY TVPPA. A RESCHEDULED DATE IS TBD AND WILL BE PROVIDED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
OSHA Hot Weather: This is an updated program that deals with the prevention of heat-related illnesses, recognizing symptoms and treatment of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Prevention methods that need to be followed before a more serious issue occurs are monitoring employees to recognize symptoms early on to prevent exhaustion and stroke. Methods of calculations included Dry Bulb Category 2 and 3 levels of heat conditions and how humidity affects Dry Bulb Category 2 and 3 levels of heat conditions and how humidity affects and complicates the conditions.
Fleet Safety Training: This includes shop safety, chemical storage, and usage, PEL limit of chemicals, machine guarding, correct use of tools and equipment, service calls to the field for running repairs, and hazardous electrical conditions that must be identified by fleet personnel, i.e., Substation entry, energized work areas, and MAD distances if the equipment is near energized conductors and equipment.
