Together, FMPA member utilities offer the best of community power, statewide strength

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 25, 2018 – The city of Tallahassee, Fla., has become the 32nd municipal electric utility to join the Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA), an Orlando-based wholesale power agency owned by municipal electric utilities throughout the state.

“Municipal electric utilities work together through FMPA to provide low-cost, reliable and clean wholesale power for their customers,” said FMPA General Manager and CEO Jacob Williams. “Tallahassee has a great municipal utility, and we look forward to working with them on mutually beneficial projects for all municipal utilities.”

Tallahassee is the fourth largest municipal electric utility in Florida and the 22nd largest in the United States. Community-owned utilities, like Tallahassee, offer advantages, such as not-for-profit operations, faster power restoration, personal service of a hometown utility, community investment and a locally accountable governing board. Meanwhile, a statewide organization, like FMPA, brings economies of scale in power generation and other services to provide low-cost, reliable and clean wholesale electricity.

“Through this FMPA partnership, we will be able to provide even more value to Tallahassee residents,” said Rob McGarrah, General Manager, City of Tallahassee Electric Utility. “This membership further expands our ability to work collaboratively with other municipal electric utilities from around the state.”
