Digger Derrick Lab
Overview
The purpose of this training is to ensure the safe and responsible operation of a Digger Derrick truck. With this training, the intended outcome is for all those that are using these devices to acquire the knowledge and skills to operate the equipment safely and productively.
Digger Derrick Lab is part of the TVPPA Apprenticeship Lineman Training Program. This training program intended for beginning apprentices introduces the groundwork for understanding the profession, such as basic electricity, math and alternating current fundamental principles.

- Pre-operational inspection and pre-flight operation
- Hand signals
- Load spotting and landing
- Load control obstacle course
- Digger operation
- Pole sitting
About the Instructor
The Lineman Apprentice Program is available from the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association (TVPPA). This training program intended for beginning apprentices introduces the groundwork for understanding the profession, such as basic electricity, math and alternating current fundamental principles. Participants learn about the tools and equipment used in everyday operations as well as the following applications:
- Meter applications
- Phasing and measuring voltage and current
- Stringing and sagging wire
- Substation operations
- Transformer connections
- Transmission and distribution line maintenance
- Underground distribution systems
Completing this program involves passing the following courses:

- Lineman Apprenticeship Lab 5: Troubleshooting
