New Year Brings a New Name for Power Plant in Taylor County
Jan. 3, 2006 – The power plant to be built in Taylor County, Fla., will begin the new year with a new name, the Taylor Energy Center.
“As we enter a new year and a new phase in our project, we believe this is a great time to affirm our commitment to Taylor County,” said Project Manager Mike Lawson. “We are so honored by the warm welcome we’ve received and so proud to be a part of this community that we wanted our project’s name to reflect that.”
The project’s Web site and e-mail address have been updated with the new name. Interested members of the public can now log on to www.taylorenergycenter.org or send an e-mail to [email protected]. The project’s toll-free phone number, (866) 884-2230, remains unchanged.
In late-2005, a 3,200-acre site in Taylor County was selected for the plant, and since that time, the project partners have prepared for the project’s next phase. Next steps for the project include preliminary plant design and the preparation of permit applications, which will be filed in 2006.
“As activity on the project increases, so will our communication and contact with the Taylor County community,” said Lawson. “We are encouraged that an open, constructive dialogue has already begun, and we hope our relationship with the community will grow in the next phase of this project.”
The Taylor Energy Center is a state-of-the-art 800 MW power plant to be located in Taylor County, Fla., near the city of Perry. The plant will help meet Florida’s growing energy demands and diversify the types of fuel that are used to generate the state’s electricity supply. This $1.5 billion project will create 1,500 construction jobs and 180 permanent jobs. The plant will be jointly owned by four community-owned electric utilities: Florida Municipal Power Agency, JEA, the City of Tallahassee, Fla., and Reedy Creek Improvement District.
