FMPA Wins Excellence in Public Power Communications Award
Award recognizes video of Key West power restoration following Hurricane Irma
ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 9, 2018 – Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) won an award in the Excellence in Public Power Communications Awards, a national competition sponsored by the American Public Power Association. The winners were announced at the association’s annual Customer Connections Conference held this week in Orlando.
The awards honored public power electric utilities in three categories: print/digital, video and web/social media. In the video category for utilities with gross revenues of $400 million or more, FMPA received an Award of Excellence for its video on Hurricane Irma power restoration in Key West.
The video tells the story of utility workers in Key West who rode out the powerful and catastrophic Category 4 storm, even when county emergency managers were thinking of evacuating and advising others to do the same. After having 100 percent of the electric system offline following the storm, the utility was able to restore power to most of its service area within five days and to all customers in 20 days.
Other award recipients this year from Florida included Beaches Energy Services (Jacksonville Beach), Florida Municipal Electric Association, Keys Energy Services (Key West), Kissimmee Utility Authority, Lakeland Electric and Orlando Utilities Commission.
