Municipal Power Plants Recognized for Risk Management
Designation recognizes excellence in managing risks, protecting assets
ORLANDO, Fla., May 20, 2014 – Two municipal power plants in Florida received elite recognition for excellence in managing business risk and protecting their assets.
Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) received a Highly Protected Risk award for its Cane Island Power Park, in Osceola County, Fla., and Treasure Coast Energy Center, in Fort Pierce, Fla., from FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers. The award recognizes facilities that put in place all reasonable loss prevention measures to protect buildings, equipment and contents from all losses including natural hazards. Only 0.4% of FM Global’s international clients received the award in 2013, and only five power plants in the Southeast United States have earned the award.
Cane Island Power Park is home to four natural gas-fueled generating units with a combined capacity of 735 megawatts. It is co-owned by Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) and Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) and operated by KUA. Treasure Coast Energy Center is home to one natural gas-fueled generator with a capacity of 300 megawatts. It is owned by FMPA and operated by Fort Pierce Utilities Authority (FPUA). Both plants provide power to 13 Florida communities served by FMPA’s All-Requirements Project.
“FMPA and its partners at KUA and FPUA take safety, security and stewardship of our assets very seriously,” said FMPA General Manager and CEO Nicholas P. Guarriello. “It is an honor to receive this high-profile recognition for our risk management focus.”
