Fort Pierce Power Plant Among Nation’s Cleanest

State-of-the-art plant features efficient technology and advanced environmental controls

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 26, 2012 – Fort Pierce residents can take comfort in knowing that their electricity comes from one of the nation’s cleanest power plants.

Treasure Coast Energy Center was ranked the fourth cleanest plant of its kind in the nation, according to a recently-published study based on Environmental Protection Agency data. The plant’s efficient generating technology, advanced environmental controls and operational excellence all contribute to its exceptional environmental performance.

The natural gas-fueled plant is owned by Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) and operated by Fort Pierce Utilities Authority. It is designed to generate 300 megawatts of electricity, enough to serve approximately 60,000 homes. Since it began operating in 2008, the plant has contributed to the modernization of FMPA’s fleet of power plants. Thanks to efficient units like Treasure Coast Energy Center, FMPA can generate each megawatt of electricity with nearly 9% less fuel than five years ago, making electricity cleaner and more affordable.
