Consumers Receive Free Energy-Saving Products, Valuable Rebates
Electric customers save with simple and affordable energy-efficiency programs
ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 5, 2011 – Electric customers received thousands of free energy saving products and valuable rebates in 2011 thanks to 14 municipal electric utilities in Florida.
“We want customers to see that energy efficiency can be simple and affordable, so we’re helping them get started,” said Florida Municipal Power Agency General Manager and CEO Nicholas P. Guarriello.
Electric customers in Bushnell, Clewiston, Fort Meade, Fort Pierce, Green Cove Springs, Town of Havana, Jacksonville Beach, Key West, Kissimmee, Lake Worth, Leesburg, Newberry, Ocala and Starke reduced their utility bills during the past 12 months thanks to:
- 4,878 free compact fluorescent light-bulbs
- 4,425 free energy-saving kits
- 1,500 free energy conservation DVDs and free online videos
- More than $470,000 in rebates to customers for approximately 3,500 energy-saving products
Customers will save 4.4 million kilowatt-hours per year thanks to these programs, enough electricity to serve a small town for a month. An average household uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month.
“While the actions we’re asking customers to take seem small, like changing a light bulb or installing a programmable thermostat, they add up to big results statewide,” said Guarriello.
The give-aways and rebates were funded by FMPA’s All-Requirements Project energy conservation fund. The fund allows participating municipal electric utilities to develop conservation programs that meet their communities’ individual needs. FMPA created the fund in 2008, as part of its Greener Communities Greener World initiative. In three years, the fund has helped customers make energy-saving improvements that will save more than 10.3 million kilowatt-hours per year or 71 million kilowatt-hours over the life of the products purchased or measures taken.
