Students will build on the foundation created in the prerequisite courses, Level 1 and Level 2. In Level 3 Power Line Design and Staking, students will build on the foundation created in the prerequisite courses, Levels 1 and 2 and are introduced to underground line design. Attention is given to understanding how to apply the theories of line design to solve special problems. After completion of this course, participants will be able complete the layout and design of most overhead and underground projects. Students will also understand the physical loads on the distribution system and the associated hardware, read DOT projects, class poles, design for special guying situations, calculate sag and create a stringing chart, and estimate sag on uneven terrain.
Course manual provided. Students need to bring a copy of their notes from the PLDS1 and 2 courses as well as the current NESC (not included in course materials, but available here from the IEEE).

About the Instructor
Clint Smith, Utility Training Services
Clint’s experience in the electric utility sector currently spans a period of 28+ years with work in cooperative, municipal and IOU organizations. Among his most significant assignments in the utility industry are:
- Business Owner and Partner at Reliance Energy Consulting
- Instruction (both full and part time) in Line Design and Staking with Utility Training Services
- System Engineer and as Manager of Engineering at Cherokee Electric Cooperative in AL
- Distribution Engineer for Coastal EMC in GA
- Consultant and Instructor with Power Delivery Associates in GA
- Clint served in the Army National Guard as a Combat Engineer
