Intro to Staking / Line Design
Overview
This course teaches participants how to maneuver through the 2023 National Electrical Safety Code, locate the tables important to a line design staking professional, and understand the important changes that affect line design, fiber design, and DER.
The course content is provided through presentation, workbook examples, and laminated clearance chart. It discusses:
- Purpose of the NESC
- Understanding liability
- Important definitions
- Grounding requirements
There are four parts in the courses, which are:
- Part 1: Substations
- Clearance requirements and fences
- New rules for solar generation and batteries
- Part 2: Overhead Lines
- Clearances – understanding requirements in all directions
- Deciphering NESC Tables and Figures
- Understanding sag charts
- Hand calculations determining pole heights and clearance checks
- Designing for Joint Use and Fiber attachments
- Understanding requirements around Grain Bins and Swimming Pools
- Strengths
- Understanding forces on a structure and hardware
- Reviewing safety factors required for code compliant design
- Reviewing updated tables for wind speeds
- Designing for facilities greater than 60′
- Clearances – understanding requirements in all directions
- Part 3: Underground Lines
- Clearances required for Conduit systems
- Clearances required for Direct Buried systems
- Part 4: Work Rules
- Rules for Employers, Employees, Electric Utility Workers, Communication Workers
