Stock Island Generating Facility
Stock Island Generating Facility is located east of Key West, Fla. This facility enhances the electric reliability for all FMPA’s customers, especially residents of Key West, who are connected to the mainland by a 120-mile high-voltage transmission line.
When Keys Energy Services (KEYS) began purchasing all its wholesale power from FMPA in 1998, FMPA agreed to maintain on-island generation equivalent to 60% of KEYS customers’ peak electrical demand. On-island generation enables KEYS to continue serving most of its customers even if the tie-line is out of service.
On Oct. 13, 2010, the Key West Utility Board approved the transfer of ownership for KEYS' power generation units to FMPA. Under the terms of the agreement, FMPA assumed ownership of all generating units at Stock Island, though KEYS would retain ownership of the Stock Island property.
