DESCRIPTION: This lab is designed for Substation Technicians and Engineers that work with protective relays in substations and distribution systems.
The Lesson Plan objectives for the course are:

Define and examine the characteristics of electric system reliability
Basics of Distribution Protection
Introduction and review of basic electrical power system calculations and principles
A brief examination of equipment damage curves and profiles
Fusing
Reclosers
Relays and substation breakers
Faults
Technology applications

The students typically do some hands-on setup, configuration, and programming of a Schweitzer Engineering Labs (SEL) Relay such as the 351S. This lab is not intended to teach the calculation of relay settings, but rather the interaction with the equipment to get the settings that have been calculated for the particular device loaded through the vendor software.  It gives the student excellent insight into how the settings are loaded, and what the buttons and lights do and/or indicate. Note: The calculations of relay settings are very complex and are usually done by a specialized engineer or consultant.
