ORLANDO, Fla., March 28, 2001 – A group of Orlando architects recognized the Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) headquarters as one of the best newly designed buildings in the city.

FMPA’s office building won an Award of Merit for design excellence at the 2001 Design Awards Gala on Saturday, March 3. The Orlando chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) sponsored the awards, as it has biannually for 15 years, to recognize extraordinary buildings and the architects who created them. The Design Awards Gala culminated Architecture Week 2001, the springtime celebration of the architectural profession.

There were 45 entries in all for the Design Awards, 28 of which competed in the Built Category. Only seven buildings received awards, and only three, including the FMPA headquarters, were winners in the Built Category. Designs spanned from entertainment to hospitality structures, housing to educational facilities and from health care to office buildings.

FMPA’s building was designed by Architects Design Group, Inc. (ADG) of Winter Park, Fla. ADG specializes in serving public sector clients and is known for producing highly colorful, contemporary architecture.

FMPA challenged the architect to design a building that showcases energy efficient technology and design. The finished product is a two-story, 25,000-square-foot structure located in South Orlando. FMPA occupied the building in May 2000.

ADG was the only design firm to receive multiple awards this year. In addition to the award for FMPA’s building, ADG received an Award of Merit in the Unbuilt Category, and an Award of Merit in the Test of Time Category.
